Roadworthy Certificate Sunbury | Startamotive
Why Is a Roadworthy Certificate Important?
A roadworthy certificate (RWC) confirms that your vehicle is safe to be driven on the road, protecting both the driver and other road users. Here are other reasons why having one is important:
- Legal Requirement: Victorian law requires a roadworthiness certificate to be present for transferring ownership or re-registering a vehicle.
- Driver Safety: The inspection verifies that key components like brakes, steering and tyres are functioning correctly to keep occupants safe.
- Prevent Accidents: Checking the car’s basic safety features minimises the risk of mechanical failures that lead to accidents.
- Insurance Validation: Having an RWC makes insurance claims easier since it’s proof of the car’s roadworthiness at the time of the incident.
What Is Checked During a Roadworthy Inspection?
An inspection at our roadworthy centre in Sunbury checks all major safety components of your vehicle. This is done according to the official guidelines, and the process focuses purely on whether the vehicle is safe to drive. Here’s what is checked:

Wheels and Tyres
Checking for appropriate tread depth and damage, besides ensuring the wheels are securely attached.

Brake Systems
Testing the function of the brakes, handbrakes, and inspecting the condition of pads as well as lines.

Steering and Suspension
Inspection for excessive wear, looseness, or damage that could compromise vehicle control.

Lamps and Reflectors
Ensuring all lights, indicators, and reflectors are undamaged and working correctly.

Seats and Seat Belts
Verifying that all seat belts operate properly and the seats are structurally sound.

Vehicle Structure
Looking for significant damage or rust that affects the structural integrity of the vehicle.

Windscreen and Wipers
Checking the windscreen for cracks, plus ensuring the wipers and washers operate effectively.

How to Get a Roadworthy Certificate in Sunbury
Obtaining your roadworthy certificate from us is a straightforward process. First, you need to book an appointment with our team at our licensed testing facility. We encourage you to inform us of any obvious issues, such as faulty lights or worn tyres, beforehand to increase the chance of passing the first time.
Once booked, simply bring your vehicle to our centre at the agreed time, and our certified inspectors will carry out the necessary checks. If your vehicle passes the roadworthy test, we will promptly issue your valid certificate. In case any tyre repairs or other fixes are needed, our experienced automotive mechanics are available on-site.
What Happens if My Car Fails the Roadworthy Test?
If your car does not meet the mandated safety standards during the test, it will fail, and a certificate cannot be issued. Instead, you’ll receive a rejection report detailing all the faults that need to be addressed before it can pass the roadworthy certificate/centre requirements. You then have a specified timeframe (14 days in Victoria) to get the necessary repairs completed by a qualified car mechanic. Once that’s all done, bring the vehicle back for a re-inspection of the failed items.

Had a great experience with Jason. I had car troubles where I couldn’t turn my car off because the keys were stuck in the ignition in the evening. He was fully booked at the time and He still took it out of his way to come help me. His great customer service was fantastic, and was very happy to help someone in need. I would highly recommend seeing Jason for any car troubles.Posted on Google![]()

I can't recommend Startamotive Sunbury highly enough. After a disappointing experience with a service at a local dealership, I had completely lost confidence. Thankfully, Jason and the team restored that trust. They took the time to listen to my concerns, explain everything clearly, and genuinely cared about getting my car back to the condition it should have been in. The service was professional, friendly, and transparent from start to finish. I can feel the difference! If you're looking for an honest, reliable mechanic in Sunbury, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Startamotive. I'll definitely be returning for all my future servicing.Posted on Google![]()

Couldn’t recommend Jason and his team highly enough. Jason is genuinely passionate about the industry and takes a lot of pride in what he does. He’s fantastic at explaining things simply and clearly, and always gives you plenty of options and ideas, explaining the pros and cons so you can make an informed decision. The whole team is friendly, knowledgeable and clearly takes pride in their work. It’s hard to find a mechanic you can completely trust, but I wouldn’t hesitate to bring my vehicles here or recommend them to family and friends. Great people, great service and a team that genuinely cares about what they do.Posted on Google![]()

Jason is a legend. Dropped off my car in the morning, and was completed in the evening of the same day. New spark plugs and coil packs, and a carbon cleaning on 2019 VW Golf. This place is highly recommended for VWs…there were about 5 in the shop when I picked up my vehicle. Jason communicated well throughout the day, texted me pictures of the worn plugs, and recommended other services before moving forward. I will definitely be bringing my vehicle here for all futures repairs.Posted on Google![]()

Jason and his team were great to deal with when my car had issues. They worked very hard to find the issue in my car over multiple days and reassured me they would have the car fixed. They were able to and I appreciate his dedication to the service he provides and his ability to break down and explain what’s going on with the car to customers. He also does his best to keep the service as affordable as possible which is always appreciated. Would highly recommend him and his teamPosted on Google![]()

Jason went above and beyond for me when I was struggling to sort out getting a pre-purchase inspection and a RWC for a car that was out in Woodend. Even offering to pick up and drop off the car from the owner for me. He made sure to squeeze me in for the RWC before a long weekend so I could get back on the road after my previous car had died. He was honest and upfront and I never felt like I was being taken for a ride. The only downside is that he is located in Sunbury and I’m in Reservoir otherwise Startamotive would 1000% be my regular mechanic.
